I Am My Own Boss And I Will Act Like One

“I am the boss and I will boss myself when no one else is there to boss me.”

One of the major reasons why people are not able to succeed in their business is because they lack the discipline to carry out the day to day tasks that require them to take action even in the midst of distractions.

Being your own boss is much different than living the life of an average employee. Typically, when you work for someone else you must wake up early, drive to work, and arrive on time. During the work week you carry out your tasks like a tired robot pre-programmed with a set of instructions and for most people Friday evening just doesn’t come fast enough. All the while you’re wishing you could spend your time doing other things.

However, once you decide to become your own boss you suddenly realize that you have more control of your time and you can decide when you want to work.

As a matter of fact, you have so much time that suddenly you don’t know what to do with it! You become unproductive as a result because only busy people get more things done. To make things worse, you don’t have a boss behind your back so you start slacking off, taking things easy and working at your own snail pace.

One month, two months, three months later, you wake up to the realization that you haven’t gotten much done and you are way behind schedule. By the fourth month you have lost so much time and haven’t made a dime, so you start looking for a normal job once again.

You start telling yourself that running your own business requires “too much work” and you convince yourself that running your own business is just not for you.

This is an all too familiar scenario for many people who jump out of the employment frying pan and into the fire of business ownership. But if you can’t discipline yourself to work out your plan, no one can. That’s why it is vitally important to have the right business mindset.

Developing a business mindset requires you to BE YOUR OWN BOSS. As your own boss you should make regular checkups on your schedule and reward and punish yourself properly.

A good idea is to do a spot check on yourself every hour to see whether you have done anything productive in the past hour. If you can’t do that then it is better to make sure you ‘clock in’ at least 8 hours of productivity just like a normal employee would.

If you fail to clock in enough hours during the day then make sure you complete those hours during the night. Don’t let the work time roll into the next day.

Don’t tell yourself that you can make up for the lost hours during the weekends. If you continue to operate your business with an employee mindset, your mind will convince yourself that weekends are rest days and you will become unmotivated. You will have to work on weekends if necessary because as your own boss you have to be there 24/7.

Lesson:  If you can’t boss yourself, find someone who will until you are able to get the hang of it.
